A recent poem - "Jose's Heartbeat"

Jose’s Heartbeat

We made a promise to each other
But a promise slowly fades
A color lost among the crowd
Of so many different shades
As years creep by and wrinkles deepen
My eyes forget your face
The softness of a skin forgotten
Gone, your kisses from my taste
A spark became a fire
A fire became a blaze
A blaze weakened to embers
Now ashes fill my gaze
I try looking back with no regret
But regret’s a mighty force
Our ship of hope and foolish love
Has drifted far off course
