A recent poem...

Grave

There’s a grave
open and waiting for me,
somewhere,
mouth agape and yawning,
and the clock ticks
and the hands turn,
and I see my little girl
grow up before me,
once tiny and cherubic,
innocent and angelic,
now a girl replaces a baby,
and soon a woman replaces the girl,
and a lady the woman,
and I just stand,
oblivious to it all,
unable to slow it all down,
to drink it all in,
to taste the sweet flavor of the present,
rather than staring at recipes for the future,
meals to cook
and dinners to eat,
mouths to feed,
and waste to discard,
this grave waits for me,
wants for me,
asks me to come visit,
I want to slow down,
I want to remember,
I want for other sights
to dance across my eyes,
rather than this lonely grave,
than this sad end,
I want to see my girl smile,
I want to hear her laugh,
I want to see the world through her eyes,
rather than mine,
see the world for its potential,
rather than its disappointment,
see the promise,
rather than the failure,
see the present,
rather than the future,
see the flowers,
rather than the grave
